Pennies for the Planet
"Pennies for the Planet," sponsored by the World Wildlife Fund, links environmental education with environmental action. This year, the program highlights the Chihuahuan Desert, the East African Mangroves and Marine Ecosystems, and the Sumatran Islands Forests and contains information on the species, habitats, and environmental challenges facing these ecoregions. The rhinoceros is this year's featured creature. The program brings the wonders of wildlife home, too, by suggesting projects for students to learn and explore about biodiversity in their own backyards. Kits containing information for youth leaders, educators, and parents, and copies of the newsletter for kids are available from World Wildlife Fund.To receive a single kit, send an e-mail to WWF at Pennies@WWFUS.ORG. (When you request your kit, please indicate the number of student newsletters you would like to receive.) or visit www.worldwildlife.org/windows/pennies.

*"Careers in Ecology"
Brochure highlights careers in ecology, which shows ecologists on the job, describes the nature and diversity of the field, provides job outlooks, and preparations for a career. Available from Ecological Society of America, esa.sdsc.edu/highschool.htm
*Green Schools ProjectThis project has three primary purposes: to bring financial relief to schools; to educate students, teachers, maintenance staff and administrators about energy efficiency; and to offer a model of energy efficiency in schools that can be replicated nationally and internationally. Students analyze behavior, develop strategies to change energy use, project impacts, track actual savings. www.ase.org/greenschools.*The Selborne ProjectEducation program of the Roger Tory Peterson Institute that supports middle school teachers who wish to adopt a hands-on method of teaching and learning. Teachers plan a six to eight week interdisciplinary unit that uses one square kilometer of area surrounding the school building as an organizing theme. Students learn science, mathematics, language arts, and social studies within the square kilometer by producing maps, field guides, and research papers. Project offers in-service teacher preparation, transportation, food and lodging, expenses for the summer workshop, stipends, classroom materials, newsletters, etc. www.rtpi.org/selborne.html

*U.S. Community Atlas

Teachers and students to work together to create a virtual vision of a community using texts and maps. Students must investigate their home area and work together to present it in a series of web pages. They must decide what constitutes the boundaries of their community, what the community is like, and how to present that effectively. Their work becomes part of a searchable database of community presentations. ESRI Schools and Libraries, Suite 250, 1305 Corporate Center Drive, St. Paul, MN 55121-1204; www.esri.com/communityatlas
